Margarita Recipe

Welcome to Margarita-Recipe.org!

Margarita is a tasty and refreshing drink, and for that reason it has become one of the most popular cocktails in America, and it doesn’t look like it will lose its position anytime soon. It is served in bars around the world and as a result of its demand the recipe of this drink is imprinted on the mind of every serious bar tender.

Margarita is a “base cocktail”, as the term suggests this recipe is the foundation for several other cocktails.

While many people enjoy drinking Margaritas, not many people are confident enough to make one in their own home. If you are one of these people you’ll be glad to know that you can purchase a Margarita mix, where you just have to add the Tequila and the ice. If that’s too much work you can purchase a mix that contains Tequila as well, leaving you to add only ice. A Margarita mix comes in really handy for parties.

Not everyone is a fan of the mix. True connoisseurs prefer to avoid this “easy” option, and prepare the mix themselves to their own high standards.

Brief History of Margarita

When something great is created, you will always find more than one person claiming to have created it, the same goes for Margarita. There are several stories going around regarding who created this cocktail, way too many to mention all of them, however there are two really common ones.

One of them involves a lady called Margarita Sames, a socialite who lived in Dallas in the 1940′s. Legend has it that Ms Sames created the first Margarita during the Christmas of 1948.

The other story that is doing the rounds names Carlos Herra as the creator of this cocktail. Carlos was from Tijuana in Mexico, and many people believe that he created the Margarita between the years of 1938 and 1939, at least ten years before Ms Sames did. So who really created it? No one knows for sure, but one day the truth will come out.

Ingredients

So what ingredients do you need in order to create this cocktail? Well, a Margarita is made up of three key ingredients, these are Tequila, an orange flavored liquer known as Triple Sec, and lemon or lime juice. These ingredients are used in a ratio of 7:4:3 respectively.

When choosing your ingredients you need to consider that the quality of the Tequila plays a big part on the quality the overall cocktail. You don’t necessarily have to buy the most expensive Tequila in order to create a quality cocktail, but you definitely shouldn’t buy the cheapest.

As mentioned before the second ingredient in a Margarita is Triple Sec, which is made from the dried pills of bitter oranges from the Caribbean. Triples Sec gives the Margarita a sweet and sour flavor. But you can add different flavors in its place to create different variations of this cocktail. These include PatrĂ³n CitrĂ³nge, Cointreau, and Grand Marnier.

You can also use different juices to add variety to your Margarita. But the lemon or lime juice is still used though, in cases like this either would be used as a condiment.

How to serve Margarita

If you go to the trouble of making a Margarita you can’t just serve it in any cup, you have to do it properly! The drink should be served in a Margarita glass, which is characterized by its long stem and wide bowl. It can also be served in a cocktail glass.

A slice of lime should then be slotted onto the rim of the glass. This piece of lime serves two purposes. First of all it is a decoration, but secondly it should be rubbed around the rim of the glass so that it helps the salt to stick to the rim.

Salt is not the only thing that can be put on the rim of the glass, sugar can also be used. Both of them add an additional flavor to the cocktail, whether you choose to rim your glass or not is down to personal preference. If you do decide to rim your glass it is wise to only do one side. Simply dip the edge of the glass into a plate of salt and rotate the cup slowly for 180 degrees to achieve this. Some people like to add one or two teaspoons of sugar or syrup to sweeten the drink, if you want to do this you will need to add it to the mix before shaking.

Margarita is usually served with ice, although some people prefer it without, the terminology for this is “straight up”. The ice can be blended with the drink, shaken (mixed within the ingredients), or the liqueur can be served over the ice with no wash (mix). The finished drink is then poured into the Margarita glass.
